2 things this year, give something up and try and do something nice
a) give up alcohol except on sundays - odd justification I have that sunday should be a day of joy. All a bit bogus particularly since giving something up that's bad for you is not really any great moral step that does any good for the world. But it does all mark a period.
b) do some daily random act of kindness. The problem with that - (bit like previous years of calling a friend each day) - is it falls over almost immediately. So this year I've decided to do the following - as it's sustainable - leave a nice message on 40 peoples' blogs - randomly chosen through a secret search formula - on technorati. Plan is to buy them a drink as well. Orla thinks I'm completely bonkers and better off giving the $400 to charity. But you never know - it might make somebody's day and that might have a knock-on effect and they pass on that feeling to someone else etc. But she is right - so I've decided to both give $400 to charity and do my random kindness plan as well.
So plan as follows:
Randomly find 40 people over the course of Lent
Leave a note saying hello on their blog
Invite them to contact me and I'll send them $10 (by paypal) to enjoy a drink on me
Also invite them to post a comment to this blog suggesting which charity i should donate the $400 to:
So if you've come across this becasue I sent you a message - send me an email - rikki at faithdigger.com or leave a comment .
I got your comment. I am not sure about which charity there are in London, but I think you should follow your heart and what you believe in, and donate to the charity which has the same causes as you believes.

You mention giving up alcohol except for Sundays. Actually, not as odd as you might think. Sundays, even in Lent are to be regarded as Easter celebrations because the Body and Blood of the risen Lord are present in the Eucharist. In the Lutheran world we sometimes do and sometimes do not "give up"something for Lent. But the idea of comprehending Sundays in Lent (as opposed to "of" Lent) as being a time to "break the fast" is not a bad concept. So, have a scotch for me next Sunday.
